Drinking absolutely pure water can kill us. All the water we normally drink, from taps, bottles, or the garden hose, contains impurities that affect a property of water called tonicity. This is a solution's ability to draw or repel water from adjacent solutions when separated by a membrane. Hypertonic solutions gain water, while hypotonic solutions lose water. Absolutely pure water, with no impurities at all, is the most hypotonic solution. So, if we drink enough of it, our cells will start absorbing water. This disturbs the balance of electrolytes in our body. This is most seriously a problem in the brain, where water poisoning can lead to brain damage, coma and even death.
If truth is like water, 100% truth will kill us. Seeking purity in all our communication is actually toxic to our relationships. Expecting laser clarity of the heart's intention to be communicated all the time is not only infeasible but also only worsens a relationship. If we spoke 100% of our intentions and what is in our hearts to the people around us every day, they would probably want to be alone for the rest of their lives. Why? Because we cannot handle 100% truth about ourselves and what people think. Though some people claim they want truth and nothing but the truth, most of us want some cushion to minimize the impact of hard truths in communication.
So we need to accept that we can never be 100% clear and pure in all our communication. It is said that there are 4 different levels of communication that happen in every conversation:
- What I think I said
- What I actually said
- What I think others heard
- What others actually heard
Our words cannot contain and convey all the information by design. That is why tone of voice, facial expression, and gestures fill in the gaps in our understanding.
So, in every communication, we must add and allow a small bit of nuance, consideration, and intentional unclarity so that a “reasonable” amount of truth can sustain “reasonable” understanding with each other. We won't see the full picture of truth until we see Jesus as he really is (2 Cor 3:18). Then we will all know the truth in full, and it will make us live forever, instead of killing us. Only pure water that does not kill is Jesus himself, the living water. (John 4:13-14) It is because through Jesus came not just truth, but "grace" and truth. (John 1:17) Grace allows truth to be true without being cruel.
